The rise of the price of natural gas supplied to Moldova from 80 dollars up to 110 dollars per 1,000 cubic metres will not have a serious impact on economy, though it will affect some categories of consumers, Economics and Trade Minister Valeriu Lazar, member of the team of negotiators who discussed a new agreement with Gazprom, stated to BASA on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

Lazar noted that the agreement was signed for the first trimester of 2006 and new negotiations with the Russian concern have already started. "We have agreed to eliminate the tension from negotiations, we signed an agreement for the first trimester and we can discuss now in silence and understanding," Minister Lazar stressed. <\/p>\n

He underlined that negotiations ended with a "pretty good" result. "Of course, we wanted more, but this is the situation," the minister noted. <\/p>\n

The sides signed an agreement on rise of natural gas price and growth of the Russian share in the national gas distribution enterprise Moldova-Gaz on Monday, January 16. Gazprom owns 50 percent plus one share in Moldova-Gaz, Chisinau owns 35.33 percent, while 13.44 percent belong to Transnistria, but it gave them up. <\/p>\n

"The sides agreed that the package of the Transnistrian side be transmitted to Gazprom, since the first has ceded this share," Lazar noted. However, he continued, this problem is only one side of the talks, but negotiations had a wide nature in general. "We have started with a new tackling of the problem, an entire complex of issues that must be settled. The talks will be based on a clear objective – the rise of profitableness of the joint enterprise Moldova-Gaz," Lazar added. <\/p>\n

Asked if Moldova could demand a higher tax for transit of Russia gas, the economics minister said that "this is also a topic of talks." <\/p>\n

According to Lazar, the macroeconomic forecasts will not essentially change after the rise of gas price. "It is the prerogative of ANRE to establish the gas prices for final consumers. I think that a growth of prices for final consumption is normal, but the government already holds a clear scheme that will allow the compensation of these rises," the minister assured. <\/p>\n

Moldovan first Deputy Premier Zinaida Greceanii and Gazprom director Alexander Miller signed ane agreement stipulating a rise of the natural gas prices by 37.5 percent, from 80 dollars up to 110 dollars, in Moscow on Monday. It should be mentioned that Russia has demanded a price of 160 dollars per 1,000 cubic metres of gas at the beginning, but Moldova sought a 80-dollar tariff. <\/p>\n

Gazprom provided 2.45 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Moldova last year. Moldova’s debts for Russian gas without penalties account for 780 million dollars, including 560 million dollars of the Transnistrian region. <\/p>\n

Earlier, Moldova-Gaz chairman Ghenadii Abaskin said that Gazprom has accepted to supply 3.4 billion cubic metres of gas to Moldova in 2006 and transit of 22 billion cubic metres to Balkans. <\/p>\n
