The foreign currency reserves of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) hit a record high exceeding $600 million. <\/p>\n

Sources in NBM told REPORTER.MD that on 6 January 2006 the central bank’s foreign currency reserves made up $601 million – the largest sum since the proclamation of Moldova’s independence. They rose by $3.56 million from the beginning of 2006 alone. <\/p>\n

On 30 December 2005 this index was $597.4 million. Last year it rose by about 27% or 127.2 million lei. The rise followed the acquisition by NBM of the foreign currency surplus transferred by the Moldovans working abroad with the aim of strengthening Moldovan Leu’s position. <\/p>\n

Last autumn, the central bank modified the system of calculating foreign currency reserves including in them the obligatory foreign currency reserves of the commercial banks from the NBM accounts, as well as the means of the World Bank Credit Line Directorate under the Ministry of Finance of Moldova \/\/ Reporter.MD<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
