Moldova hopes to agree the price it pays for natural gas from Russian energy giant Gazprom by the end of January, the country’s prime minister said on television Wednesday. <\/p>\n

"Moldova hopes to reach a compromise on the price of energy supplies [from Russia]," Vasile Tarlev said. <\/p>\n

Tarlev did not disclose how much the former Soviet republic was prepared to pay for Russian gas, but said he hoped the price would be reasonable. Tarlev also said that Moldova still had hopes of retaining the current price of $80 per 1,000 cubic meters. <\/p>\n

A Moldovan government spokesperson refuted local and foreign media reports, Thursday, which said First Deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Greciani was in Moscow, negotiating the contract with the gas concern. <\/p>\n

"Routine talks are in progress, mainly on the telephone," the spokesperson said. <\/p>\n

The talks with Moldova are continuing against the backdrop of a long dispute over prices with Ukraine that only ended after Gazprom to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine for several days at the start of this year after the latter had declined to pay the market price for Russian gas. The price row has since been settled, and the country is currently paying $95 per 1,000 cu m. <\/p>\n
