\n\"\"On December 21, 2005, the European Union had granted increased trading preferences to imports from Moldova, along with Georgia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and 11 Latin American countries –Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. <\/p>\n

The European Commission granted important preferences (duty and quota-free access) to these 15 vulnerable developing countries that have implemented sustainable development and good governance policies under the ‘GSP+’ incentive. <\/p>\n

Peter Mandelson, the EU Trade Commissioner, said the decision was "further proof of the EU’s efforts to help developing countries, at the same time promoting sustainable development and human rights." The EU cut duties and quotas on more goods from those countries as its recognition that these countries adopted key international conventions related to human rights, environmental protection and drug trafficking. <\/p>\n

These 15 countries will benefit from the EU’s new generalized system of preferences (GSP) that will take effect on Jan. 1, 2006. Under this new GSP, beneficiary countries will be able to increase the number of their products exported to the EU market duty free or with low tariff from 6,900 to 7,200. It will affect mostly agricultural and fisheries products. <\/p>\n

According to the European Commission, the EU GSP is the most generous of all developed country GSP systems. The volume of imports to the EU from developing countries under the GSP is greater than the volume of imports under the US, Canadian and Japanese GSP systems combined. The same source says that in 2004 EU imports under GSP totalled €40 billion. Spending under the equivalent American scheme, which is the world’s second most widely used GSP imports, totalled comparably less at €22 billion. <\/p>\n

Moldova’s trade share with EU is around 25% and the country main exports are agricultural products (mostly wine) and textiles and clothing.
