Moldovan companies directed 202 million lei to sponsoring and philanthropy in 2004, or 4.7 percent of the profit obtained on economy on average, according to the first report on Corporate Social Responsibility in Moldova, worked out by the Expert-Grup organisation and commissioned by UNDP-Moldova. <\/p>\n

The size of financing for charity actions rose by about 57 million lei compared to 2003. Sponsoring and philanthropy represent 0.63 percent of GDP. <\/p>\n

"The social activity of Moldovan companies is on the rise, but it is not wide enough yet," said economist Valeriu Prohnitchi, coordinator of Expert-Grup. The study developers recommended companies, civil society and authorities to promote a dialogue rega rding promotion of social actions more actively. <\/p>\n

Also, experts noted that rather "force than persuade" private firms to hold charity actions in many cases. In turn, companies ignore the social rights of workers in many cases. "There are many cases when children are used to work in agriculture or constr uctions, companies pay salaries "in envelope", etc.," said Alexandru Oprunenco, representative of Expert-Grup. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, Valeriu Strelet, director of the company Bioprotect, said that enterprises are almost imposed to apply the double accounting. "The salary "in envelope" is a civic courage because managers keep specialists in country this way. It is imp ossible to pay a high salary to a good specialist with social taxes of up to 30 percent," Strelet added. <\/p>\n

The study of Expert-Grup also establishes that firms make charity in different measure, in order to increase profits, to enhance reputation or from moral reasons. "Finally, those who benefit from social assistance of companies do not care of the goal of firm, the aid is important." <\/p>\n

"It is not hard for several businessmen to build a well. However, their efforts need the support of civil society and authorities," Oprunenco estimated. <\/p>\n

The report Corporate Social Responsibility in Moldova was drafted within the U.N. Global Pact Programme, a tool for consolidation of relations between public sector, civil society and private sector. More than 2,000 companies from 80 countries, including 50 which created national networks, have subscribed to the Global Pact, launched five years ago at the initiative of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. <\/p>\n
