The increase of the natural gas price by the Russian gas giant Gazprom and Gazexport, Gazprom’s export arm, can put in danger gas deliveries to Eastern and Western Europe. Ukraine refused recently to sign a new gas transportation contract for 2006. <\/p>\n

Gazprom demands that Ukraine must pay for Russian gas at world prices and end all barter deals. As of today, Ukraine keeps a portion of the gas supplied by Gazprom to Europe as payment for transiting. Kiev faces an increase in price from $50 to 160$ per 1,000 cubic meters. And the Ukrainian government insists that the price should stay unchanged for 2006.<\/font><\/div>\n

Gazprom exports natural gas to Western Europe and former Soviet Union using differentiated price policy. <\/font>Experts believe<\/font><\/a> (see Jamestown Foundation’s related article) that Russia uses its monopoly status as an instrument of its foreign policy in the former Soviet Union. Those ex-republics that demonstrate pro-Western leanings will face a significant rise in gas prices this January.<\/font><\/div>\n

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania will pay somewhere between $120 and $125 per 1,000 cubic meters, an increase from $85-95. Georgia and Armenia will pay about $110 next year and Moldova will pay $160, a sharp increase from current $80. <\/font><\/div>\n
 <\/font><\/div>\n
Gazprom has announced that it plans to increase its natural gas exports to Europe by 4.1% in 2006 — from 145 billion cubic meters in 2005 to 151 billion cubic meters. Gazprom supplies some 25% of Europe’s natural gas. <\/p>\n

Gazprom’s plans might not be fulfilled. The transit gas pipelines passes Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova. Ukraine already stated its readiness to fight with Gazprom on the gas price and, most recently, Moldova stated that it is considering increasing the transit fees for gas. These countermeasures that are likely to be taken by Ukraine and Moldova would ultimately affect the final price of gas the Western countries pay to Gazprom. And they might affect the demand too.
