\"\"The Russian enterprise Gazprom does not have commercial or economic reasons to double the price of the natural gas delivered to Moldova, Minister of Economy and Commerce Valeriu Lazar told. <\/p>\n

He said that the current price of 80 dollars per 1000 cubic meters of gas that Moldova pays at the moment is the highest in the CIS space and allows the operator to obtain profit. <\/p>\n

Valeriu Lazar stressed that the working group created by the Government continues the negotiations with Gazprom over gas prices. He specified that the Government is drawing up a plan of action intended to reduce the negative impact an eventual rise in gas prices will have on the population and on the national economy. <\/p>\n

According to estimates, individual consumers will be hit the hardest if gas prices go up. The real sector of the economy will suffer less. <\/p>\n

One of the versions that is being examined is the payment of the Value Added Tax (VAT) for the imported gas at the place of destination and not in the exporting country as it is done at present. Moldova is the only country that pays the VAT according to this principle, the minister told. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan authorities are also examining the possibility of applying levers on the transit of Russian natural gas via Moldova, as well as measures of supporting the socially vulnerable strata. <\/p>\n

Economic analysts Valeriu Prohnitchi said that the impact of the increase in gas prices will hardly hit the population if the rise will take place immediately. The Government will not be able to pay compensations starting 2006 and if it decides to do so it will have to revise the state budget for next year. <\/p>\n

Mircea Rusu, chairman of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Moldavia, told REPORTER.MD that the impact of the rise in gas prices will be painful because it will influence directly the increase in prices in the energy and thermal sector. It will also cause the rise in the cost of the minimum consumption basket, while the investors will not want to invest in the energy sector. <\/p>\n

On Tuesday, November 29, Gazprom announced it will raise the prices of the natural gas it supplies to the CIS and Baltic countries as of 2006. <\/p>\n

Aleksandr Reazanov, deputy president of Gazprom Administration, announced that the tariff for Moldova and Ukraine will be of 150-160 dollars, the highest in the former Soviet space, the Baltic countries will pay 120-125 dollars per 1000 cubic meters of gas, while Georgia and Armenia will pay by 110 dollars. Reazanov was quoted by the Russian press as saying that the doubling in gas prices is not a political but an economic action. <\/p>\n

It should be mentioned that on Wednesday the Transdniestrian authorities took the decision to withdraw their shares in Moldova-Gaz JSC and to transfer them to the Russian enterprise Gazprom.
