The Cuciurgan power plant located in the Transnistrian region uncontrolled by Chisinau, has stopped the electricity supply to the distribution networks on the right bank of the Dniester river, BASA learned from officials of the Moldelectrica and Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure who spoke under condition to remain anonymous. <\/p>\n

Knowledgeable sources said that the station has gradually reduced the current supplies, and it stopped the supply completely the past 24 hours. Officials of the Industry Ministry said that the ministry was not officially informed about stoppage of energy supplies. <\/p>\n

Consumers receive electricity for the time being, but officials avoid comments on further evolution. As a current deficit is being registered in the network, many consumers on the right bank of the Dniester river could be turned off electricity. <\/p>\n

Contacted by BASA, representatives of the distribution company Union Fenosa confirmed that no turnoffs were registered until now. "The government is doing its best to obtain supplies in order to compensate the deficit in network," they assured. Moldova negotiates with producers from Romania and Ukraine. <\/p>\n

Transnistrian press reports said that Cuciurgan has stopped supplying electricity because distribution networks did not accept higher electricity tariffs. Although it was earlier announced that the supply of current would be possible on November 1, the plant administration accepted till November 8-9, and Chisinau hosted negotiations on this issue meanwhile. <\/p>\n

The Chisinau authorities and new owners of the main energy plant, CERS Moldoveneasca, started negotiations ten days ago. "As nobody says anything about their results, we can guess that they take place without any important outcome,” the economic newspaper ECO said on Wednesday. “After the Moldovan authorities have turned down pretension of the Cuciurgan power plant, the latter reduced the energy supplies by 50 percent last week," reads the paper. <\/p>\n

Moldova is dependent on the Cuciurgan plant, which ensures 54 percent of Moldova’s needs, and massive imports from Ukraine, which posted readiness to supply electricity to Moldova, would be impossible without it. <\/p>\n

High-ranking officials from Romania and Ukraine said last week in Chisinau that these states could supply current to Moldova in case of need. <\/p>\n

The Cuciurgan plant stopped the current supplies to the right bank of the Dniester rover in late 2004, and many localities faced a blackout. <\/p>\n
