The cereal harvest in the first two quarters of the current years made up 1.4 million tonnes. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry said that the wheat harvest totaled about 1,070 tonnes of this. The highest wheat crop in the last ten years was obtained in 2001 – 1,180 tonnes. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the higher quantity did not generate a higher quality, an analysis of the independent analytical and research center Expert-Grup said. The low content of gluten is characteristic for about 70 percent of the harvest, fact that will not give the producers the possibility to get profitable prices. <\/p>\n

If Moldova kept the productivity from 2005 and expanded the cultivated areas to the maximum level of 434,000 ha (2001), the total yield would amount to 1.3 million tonnes, the mentioned center says. On the other hand, Expert-Grup analysts admit that most of the areas cultivated with cereals oppose the objective of economic policy of the Government, which is for increasing the areas cultivated with plants that enable to get a high value added. <\/p>\n

The yield obtained in 2005 (30.6 quintal\/ha) is higher than the average crop from 1990-2004 (29.0 q\/ha, if not taking into account the abnormally poor harvest in 2003), but far from 40.3 quintal\/ha obtained in 1993. If in 2005 Moldova had gathered the same amounts as in 1993, the global wheat yield would have amounted to 1.4 million tonnes. “Thus, not the improvement of the existing technologies, but the introduction of a new agricultural technology is needed in Moldova to get a harvest of 50-60 q\/ha as in the USA, Canada, or Belgium.
