This was announced by Gazprom Deputy Chairman Aleksandr Ryazanov last week on September 8th at a signing ceremony on gas supply with the Republic of Georgia. Georgia will pay $110 per 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas and Ukraine will pay $180 in 2006, Infotag news agency reports.  According to the same source, Gasprom stated recently that all former USSR republics, except Belarus, will have to pay international prices for Russian gas. <\/p>\n

Russia, as the region’s dominant energy supplier, has deepened the dependence of eastern European states whose vulnerability is gradually transformed into political leverage due to Russian government stake in energy giants like Gazprom and Lukoil. Moldova’s closer ties with the West, as well as Ukraine’s and Georgia’s, irritates Russia.
