The Moldovan Union of Transporters and Road Builders (UTD) will solicit the government to increase the tariffs in urban and interurban passenger transports by at least 25 percent after rise of fuel prices, BASA has learned from union chairman Vladimir Datco. <\/p>\n

The union seeks a tariff of 0.35 lei per kilometer, compared with 0.28 lei at present. "A draft in this regard will be tabled to the executive in the near future for examination," Datco said. <\/p>\n

He noted that the rise of tariffs is unavoidable after prices rose suddenly on Tuesday. "One part of companies will go bankrupt, other will obtain only symbolic incomes, and even the most profitable firms will reduce their revenues by at least 20 percent without higher tariffs." <\/p>\n

Datco added that the current transportation tariff was established on basis of the cost of 7.8 lei per liter of gasoline, "while this limit was exceeded by over 35 percent." <\/p>\n

UTD solicited the Ministry of Transportation and Road Management last June to draft a mechanism which would allow an automatic growth of passenger transportation tariff, in dependence of evolution of prices of oil products.
