\"\"Apa-Canal Chisinau, the supplier of water and sewerage operator in the Moldovan capital, has renewed the discussions regarding the tariffs for water in the city. The company had failed more than once in the past two years to persuade the municipal authorities to raise them. <\/p>\n

"The enterprise has proposed new calculations to the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) and to the Agency for Regional Development, and the calculations are being reviewed at the moment," Constantin Becciev, manager of Apa-Canal, told a City Hall meeting on Monday. <\/p>\n

Becciev said that the new tariffs will be transmitted to the Chisinau Municipal Council, which is handles the price and tariff policy, for a decision next week. Becciev declined to name for journalists the motives of renewing the request to raise the tariff for Apa-Canal services. <\/p>\n

For two years, the Chisinau Municipal Council had been declining all the requests to raise the tariffs on water, with Communist councillors blocking all attempts in this regard. <\/p>\n

At the last meeting of the Council, Apa-Canal Chisinau asked to establish a tariff of 4.40 lei for a cubic metre of water consumed by residents, as against the present tariff of 2.62 lei, and to raise the tariff for businesses from 14.90 lei to 20.67 lei. <\/p>\n

Apa-Canal Chisinau has defended its request by saying that the present tariffs do not cover the expenditure. In addition, the increase is envisaged in an agreement signed by the enterprise with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and which is quaranteed by the Moldovan government.
