MANITOWOC — A group of more than 28 people from Manitowoc will travel on Saturday to Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe, to assess an ongoing project to modernize the country’s agricultural economy. <\/p>\n

Norval Dvorak of Manitowoc, founder of the Moldova Calf Account charity, will lead the group through the village of Dusmani, Moldova on a two-week trip to monitor the progress of the farm development program. <\/p>\n

“People want to see how this works,” he said. <\/p>\n

Using a flood of $50 donations, the charity helped poor farmers purchase calves for milking or raise calves until they are ready for market sale. Families in Moldova live on an average $400 a year. Families are forced to sell their calves at a young age for much-needed cash, said Dvorak. He said that nearly $9,000 has been raised to buy roughly 180 calves for more than 300 families in Dusmani. <\/p>\n

“They could not believe that anyone in America would be willing to help them,” he said. <\/p>\n

Dvorak said he is teaching farmers how to develop livestock and increase their productivity through farming in a cooperative. Doris Hartman, a local supporter of the venture, said the project would become a model for other farming communities in Moldova. She added that the gains to farmers have been substantial. <\/p>\n

“They’re jumping (ahead) a century, or two,” said Hartman. <\/p>\n

Dvorak, a former meatpacking executive, was tapped by the U.S. State Department under the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs program to educate farmers in Eastern Europe on how to increase their production and efficiency. He began his visits to Moldova in 2002 to assess the economic situation in the former Soviet Republic. <\/p>\n
