\"\"The cabinet of ministers on Tuesday decided to withdraw the ban on sale and importation of second-hand clothes and footwear. <\/p>\n

Premier Vasile Tarlev said this was the first decision of its own which the government did away with, describing the move as "a discreditation" of his executive. He instructed the competent authorities to probe the conditions under which the ban had been introduced two weeks ago. The ministers were also told to think of measures that would help stop abuses in the area. <\/p>\n

The governmental ban on second-hand clothes and footwear applied for the import of this goods from September and for the sale from March, in a move to foil contraband and ensure good sanitation. This angered vendors of second-hands, who warned of wide protests should this decision be enforced. They feared the ban would leave an estimated 15,000 people jobless and would deprive a majority of ordinary people from buying cheap clothes, at a time when 80 percent of the population wears clothes from second-hand markets. <\/p>\n

The Small Business Association said Moldova imported last year second-hand goods – except for automobiles – worth 24 million lei (1.92 million dollars), with taxes from this business amounting to eight million lei.
