Last year, over 55 thousand people donated blood in Moldova, but only 7% of them were paid-for donors of blood and plasma, it was said at a news conference held by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection today on the occasion of the World Blood Donor’s Day – June 14. <\/p>\n

Although the fee for a portion of blood is 89 lei, which might seem not so bad to many, approximately three-quarters of all donors sacrifice their blood only in extreme cases – for their relatives, friends or acquaintances when necessary. The rest do this absolutely voluntarily, no matter for whom, responding to whatever pleas for help by unknown people, say, over television or radio. <\/p>\n

Each person donates 350-430 milliliters of blood a time. The National Blood Transfusion Center says it has no shortage of blood supply at the present time. Last year, the Center made over 30 thousand transfusion operations. In 2006, this figure is expected to reach 70 thousand. <\/p>\n

In 2006-2008, equipment at all the Center’s subdivisions and laboratories across the country will be replaced with new one in the framework of an agreement the Moldovan Government has signed with the Council of Europe Development Bank. For this, a special project, "Blood Transfusion Security in the Republic of Moldova", has been worked out for this republic. <\/p>\n

Presently, over 1.5 thousand Moldovan citizens hold The Honorable Donor title awarded for 20 and more blood donations free of charge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
