The report “The Republic of Moldova: Policies for economic growth, workplaces’ creation and poverty reduction”, which represents an independent study carried out by international and national experts, was launched on Tuesday, in Chisinau. <\/p>\n

The leader of the team of consultants, John Weeks, professor at the University from London, mentioned that “Moldova has a preponderantly agricultural economy, but a strategy for economic growth, based only on agriculture is not the way that would lead to durable poverty reduction. A long-term viable and durable strategy has to base on the creation of a competitive industrial sector at international level.” <\/p>\n

According to Weeks, “the productivity growth in agriculture and industry will need a well-directed program of public investments that would attract internal and foreign private investments, as well as the launching of certain projects that would reduce poverty directly.” <\/p>\n

International expert also stated that the economic growth in Moldova is not durable. “Certainly, in the last 4-5 years, many economic problems were solved in Moldova, but at present its economic growth depends on money transfers from abroad, which is not a durable procedure. Namely this cause discourages the exports and investments, or money transfers lead to an overestimated currency exchange and to a high interest rate,” specified Weeks. <\/p>\n

The report that was launched on Tuesday ascertains that the Republic of Moldova needs a program consolidated and coordinated by public investments more ambitiously, putting emphasis on making investments in favor of economic growth and on poverty reduction. Public investments are not carried out in the infrastructure of transport, communications and energy resources, so the base for a long-term durable growth is eroded. <\/p>\n

Deputy director of ADEPT, economic analyst, Igor Botan stated that the report represents a final result of a project curried out within 18 months, designed for stimulating a national dialogue about the options of policies regarding the economic growth and poverty reduction.
