Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has promulgated the law on free trade agreement with Moldova, which the Supreme Rada ratified on May 19, according to the press service of the Ukrainian chief of state. <\/p>\n

Kiev and Chisinau signed the free trade agreement in November 2003 and the Moldovan legislature ratified it in February 2004. The agreement will take effect after Ukraine’s entry in the World Trade Organisation (WTO), to which Moldova is a member. Ukraine expects to become a WTO member by late 2005. <\/p>\n

An August 1995 agreement is in effect at present. Once Moldova joined the WTO in 2001, the sides decided to negotiate a new agreement which would comply with the WTO principles. <\/p>\n

The agreement calls for a "no-exception" regime of trade between the two ex-Soviet countries, under the WTO rules and practices; for a favourable business environment and investment climate; and normal legal conditions for loyal competition and reduction of monopolies. The sides committed themselves to protect their markets, compensate losses and apply anti-dumping and safeguard measures in line with WTO rules. <\/p>\n

In September 2004 the Rada reviewed the document, but a low turnout prevented its ratification – in spite of arguments from a parliamentary committee in favour of ratification. <\/p>\n

According to the National Bureau for Statistics of Moldova, Ukraine is the second largest trade partner of Moldova. Moldova imported goods worth 146.7 million dollars from Ukraine in the first four months of 2005, while its exports to the Ukrainian market accounted for 23.4 million dollars. <\/p>\n

Moldova’s imports from Ukraine rose 3.6-fold in 2001-2005, while the Moldovan exports to Ukraine grew by 9.1 percent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
