The Republic of Moldova in relation with the European Union benefits at present by the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which envisages a trade preference granted unilaterally by the developing countries to the countries with the economy in transition. <\/p>\n

According to the head of the main division of the commercial regime and the World Trade Organization, Octavian Calmac, the average of the customs duties in the EU is of about 6% at present, so “the issue of the Moldovan products’ access to this market is not related to the customs duties.” According to Calmac, the impediments to the export of Moldovan products on the European market are of other character. These are related to the application of some sanitary, fitosanitary measures or technical barriers, which are applied by these countries. <\/p>\n

If about 70% of the Moldovan export to CIS countries accounts for alcoholic beverages, fruits, vegetables and products from them, than in EU countries Moldova exports three categories of goods: textile products, sunflower seeds and kernel of walnut. Alcoholic products have no access to the European market, because they are not rivals at the chapter standardization, quality etc. <\/p>\n

In the same connection, Calmac mentioned that the nomenclature of the exported products went down by 25% in the last four years. Thus, if in 2001 Moldova exported products from about 700 groups of goods, at present products from 600 groups of goods are sold abroad. <\/p>\n

In the first quarter of the current year, Moldovan products and goods in the amount of 74mln dollars were exported to the EU countries, which is by 2.5% less than in the similar period of last year.
