Individuals who earn more than two million lei (160,000 dollars) a year could have to pay half of this amount as income taxes starting next year, in line with a fiscal policy for 2006 that the cabinet of ministers approved on Wednesday, June 8. <\/p>\n

The executive proposes that a 50-percent tax be introduced for earnings of over two million lei, and 35 percent for 1-2 million lei. The cabinet proposes a harsher taxation for incomes of millions for the first time. The highest income tax for individuals, 20 percent, is in effect now for revenues larger than 21,000 lei (1,680 dollars). <\/p>\n

Also, the executive proposes the reduction of income tax from 9 down to 8 percent for individuals who earn maximum 16,200 lei. People who earn maximum 21,000 lei could pay a 13-percent tax, compared with 14 percent at present, while the tax for revenues larger than 21,000 lei could be lowered from 20 percent down to 18 percent. <\/p>\n

Also, the cabinet intends to reduce the income tax for businesses from 18 percent down to 15 percent. <\/p>\n

Deputy Finance Minister Mihail Pop told journalists that the losses from lower income taxes for individuals and businesses are evaluated at 190 million lei in 2006. "However, they will be recovered from economic growths and salary rises," he added. <\/p>\n

The parliament must examine and approve these amendments in order to enforce them. <\/p>\n

According to updated data unveiled in 2001, six persons in Moldova declared incomes larger than one million lei. However, experts of the Fiscal Inspectorate said then that the number of millionaires is higher because people who worked in one place were not obliged to present income declarations for 2001.
