\nThe Russian Federation did not officially notify Chisinau over its decision to stop the importation of Moldovan agricultural products, BASA has learned from Anatol Spivacenco, deputy minister of agriculture and food industry. "We have learned about interdictions from journalists, as no official motivations were available so far," Spivacenco said. <\/p>\n

He was puzzled over Moscow’s decision to stop the importation of vegetables and fruits and presumed that this action has a political nature. <\/p>\n

Spivacenco noted that accusations of Russian experts that Moldovan authorities violate the international agricultural production supply norms "are untrue, while Moldovan vegetables and fruits are among most ecological ones in Europe, since they are grown under natural conditions alone." <\/p>\n

Officials in the state sanitary quarantine service told BASA that service director Nicolae Soia discussed with his Moscow counterpart on Monday, but no results of their talks are available so far. <\/p>\n

Russian press reports quoted Sergey Dankvert, chairman of the Russian veterinary and sanitary control service, as saying on Monday that Russia has stopped the imports of agricultural products from Moldova because the Moldovan competent authorities "violate the Russian and international agricultural production supply norms." <\/p>\n

The chairman of the State Duma Committee for the CIS, Andrey Kokoshin, said in an interview with RIA Novosti on Monday that "the effect of sanctions against imports from Moldova will be visible in one month and half." He noted that Moscow could "apply similar measures soon" besides stoppage of agricultural products. <\/p>\n

According to statistics, Moldova exported 40,400 tons of fruits and grapes and 4,800 tons of vegetables to Russia in January-April 2005. The stoppage of imports of Moldovan fruits and vegetables comes with less than one month after Russia has prohibited the importation of meat and sausages from Moldova. In this context, the Russian newspaper Kommersant said that Russian importers regard the stoppage of imports "as political measures and they are alarmed over a possible ban of wine supplies." Wines hold the largest share in Moldovan exports to Russia. <\/p>\n
