Statisticians explain the reduction through decline of rail transportation by about 19.3 percent sue to suspension of cargo loading and unloading operations at railway stations on the left bank of the Dniester river and Bender municipality. To mention that railroads, the only economic unit located in the Transnistrian territory by administrated by Chisinau, were separated in 2004 through creation of the railway company of Transnistria. BNS does not take into account the Transnistria-based enterprises when it drafts statistics. <\/p>\n

Data show that the trains held the highest share in cargo transportation in the first trimestre – 88 percent of cargo transportation or 2.8 million tons, followed by motor cargo transportation – 385,000 tons, ships 5,600 tons, and airships only 19 tons. <\/p>\n

Motor transportation enterprises posted a 16.5 percent growth and air transportation enterprises reported a 5.6 percent rise. <\/p>\n

The BNS data also show that the number of passengers transported by buses and minibuses rose by 4.2 percent compared with January-March 2004, up to 25.1 million passengers.
