Mr. Shengman Zhang, Managing Director of the World Bank in charge of operations, completed his two-day official visit to Moldova Tuesday. The main purpose of his visit (the first to the country) was to meet the leadership of the republic, get to know the people and the country, and to explore further ways to strengthen World Bank cooperation with Moldova, the World Bank Moldova Country Office reported. <\/p>\n

In Chisinau, Mr. Zhang met with President of Moldova Mr. Vladimir Voronin, Speaker of the Parliament Mr. Marian Lupu; Prime Minister Mr. Vasile Tarlev, and key Government and Parliament officials. He also had meetings with representatives of civil society, business and donor community. Mr. Zhang was joined by Mr. Paul Bermingham, Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, based in Kiev Regional Office, and Mr. Edward Brown, Country Manager, based in Chisinau.<\/p>\n

"It was a short visit, but a great opportunity to see for myself the country. I am leaving the country with a much clearer understanding of what the situation is and what would be our role, as an international development partner, to better assist Moldova in implementation of its development agenda, particularly the EGPRSP and EU-Moldova Action Plan", said Mr. Zhang.<\/p>\n

The WB Managing Director and Moldovan authorities exchanged views on the challenges facing Moldova as it works towards fulfilling its European aspirations and addressing poverty. They also discussed key areas for further cooperation. He noted the excellent relationship with Moldova… "something we would like to build on and strengthen in the coming years<\/p>\n

The guest noted that the economy is doing well and that poverty has declined considerably in the last 3-4 years, and congratulated the authorities for their good stewardship. He noted that the EGPRSP and EU-Moldova Action Plan offer the framework for the Government’s reform program, and assured the authorities that the World Bank, as a development partner, is ready to support efforts to tackle the structural impediments needed to sustained pro-poor growth. These efforts, Mr. Zhang noted, would help attract increased funding from the World Bank and other development partners. He indicated that about 50% of new World Bank funding is expected to be in grant form, thus helping partially with the debt problem.<\/p>\n

The World Bank Managing Director had open discussions with the representatives of civil society, the banking sector and the business community. The issues discussed during the meetings related to the role of the Bank in supporting civil society involvement in implementation, evaluation and monitoring of EGPRSP, civil society capacity building, support for the development of private sector in Moldova and improvements in the investment climate, as well as opportunities for youth inclusion in the development discourse and operations.<\/p>\n

He visited a Pilot Activity in the City of Ungheni, implemented under the Heating Component of the Energy II Project, financed by the Bank. The pilot operation is testing new solutions and heating options to be implemented under the restructuring of heating systems in smaller towns of Moldova, for the benefit of the local communities.<\/p>\n
