The airport of the Moldovan capital took the loan from the EBRD in 1998, to modernise its premises. The local government contributed another three million for the project. <\/p>\n

According to Nirean, till now the airport has paid half of the debt towards the Bank. "At this moment we have paid one million dollars more than the scheduled envisaged, and if we continue this way, we’ll hopefully get rid of the debt two years before deadline," he said. <\/p>\n

The announcement came in response to press allegations that the airport was facing hardship in debt payments and that its relations with the EBRD were at strain over this debt. On the contrary, Mr. Nirean underlined, the Bank regards the modernisation of the Chisinau airport as one of its most successful projects in Moldova. "We are keen to shake off this burden and contract new credits for development," he stated. <\/p>\n
