Four out of ten persons in Moldova believe that the collapse of the Soviet Union harmed their country. As a Gallup survey shows, some 42% of Moldovans share this opinion, while 26% think that the breakup caused benefits. Only 10% said that the dissolution of the USSR brought no effects, while 22% do not have an opinion.<\/p>\n

Similar situation can be seen in other former Soviet republics.<\/p>\n

Armenians see the collapse of the USSR the most harmful. Over 66% of citizens believe so, while only 12% see it as a benefit for their country. Roughly 56% of Ukrainians believe that the end of the Soviet Union was harmful, while 23% think otherwise.<\/p>\n

Overall, 51% of people living in former Soviet republics believe that the collapse of the USSR was harmful.<\/p>\n

It is to note that the survey was conducted only in 11 former Soviet republics, except Uzbekistan and three EU member states Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.<\/p>\n

“Residents of these former Soviet republics are more than twice as likely to say the breakup hurt (51%) than benefited their countries (24%),” the Gallup study has revealed.<\/p>\n

Gallup explains the results by claiming that life has not been easy for many after the Soviet bloc dismantled.<\/p>\n

“Residents there have lived through wars, revolutions, coups, territorial disputes, and multiple economic collapses,” Gallup stressed in a press release.<\/p>\n

Another finding is that people aged 15 to 44 are “nearly three times as likely as those 65 and older to say the collapse benefited their countries.” However, the older people who care about pensions and free healthcare are more likely to say the dissolution of the USSR harmed their countries because such social benefits disappeared or have gotten worse.<\/p>\n

The surveys were conducted with more than 1,000 adults aged 15 and older between June and August 2013 in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine.
