On December 1, 1918, the Greater Romania encompassed Bessarabia, known today as the Republic of Moldova, with some components currently part of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Massive events are being organized throughout entire Romania and also in Moldova&rsquo;s capital of Chisinau.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Hundreds have surrounded the Government in Chisinau forming a human chain in an attempt to show the unity of Romanians from both sides of the Prut River that currently separates the two countries speaking the same language &ndash; Romanian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to a press release of the Civil Platform &ldquo;Action 2012&rdquo; who organized the event, the participants called on hasting the unification process of the two countries following the model of 1918.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The organizers carried a 30-meter-long banner which read: &ldquo;Unification is Power.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;We are happy about the Vilnius success, but we are even more excited about the unification of 1st of December. The following years will clearly lead to integration with Romania. This is the reason why we danced &lsquo;hora&rsquo; around the government &ndash; to show that we want to be part of the same state with Romania,&rdquo; said Irina Gutu, an organizer of the event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dozens of marches and events are organized in the largest cities of Romania, including in Bucharest, the capital. Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti participated at the events organized in Bucharest near his Romanian counterpart, President Traian Basescu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mr. Basescu said a few days ago in a talk show that Romania&rsquo;s next objective is to reunify his country. Pro-unification movements in Moldova and Romania welcomed the initiative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;When a nation has the opportunity to be together, it should not give up,&rdquo; Romanian President Traian Basescu said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">He continued: &ldquo;It may not happen straightaway, but it will happen one day, because blood is thicker than water. I think this is the right time to say that we have this objective, if Moldovan people want this. I am convinced that if Moldova wants to unite, then Romania will accept.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mr. Basescu&rsquo;s statements were not welcomed by everyone in Romania and Moldova, some politicians saying that such statements might cause trouble.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A recent survey shows that over 61.7% of Romanians say they would agree with the unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania in case the European integration of their neighboring country will be impossible.
