Over 2,786 persons were denied permission to cross the border of the Republic of Moldova during the first six months of 2013. Some 2,212 persons were stopped while trying to leave the country, said the fifth progress report for Moldova with regard to the Visa Liberalization Action Plan issued Friday by the EU Commission in Brussels.<\/p>\n

According to the report, the main reasons for refusal were: expired or invalid travel documents, lack of visa for the country of destination and non-conformity with the status of the border crossing point.<\/p>\n

Border Police Department of the Ministry of Interior investigated 173 criminal cases. Out of these, 45 were sent for trial and only 33 are before the prosecutor.<\/p>\n

“The breakdown is as follows: 8 cases of smuggling; 8 cases of irregular migration; 73 cases of illegal crossing of the state border; 2 cases of trafficking in human beings; 3 cases of illegal possession of ammunitions and 79 cases of document counterfeiting,” the report has found.<\/p>\n

Tackling illegal migration, the Border Police Department installed fixed border surveillance systems with EU financial support.
