Irina, 30, is a disabled woman who can be seen every day on the “Stefan cel Mare” Avenue in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova. The woman has been in a wheelchair since she was nine. Irina was never able to go to school and get an elementary education because she did not have a wheelchair at that time, the Information Centre of Human Rights based in Chisinau said in their report published on discriminare.md.<\/p>\n

Irina is now a beggar, this being her only way to earn money. She cannot have a job because of her disability and the limitations she experiences on a regular basis. Almost everywhere Irina goes to she does not have access ramps. Stores, cafeterias or even some public transportation means do not provide equal access to everyone.<\/p>\n

However, the legislation envisages that all public institutions must provide access to people with disabilities.<\/p>\n

In the video below, Irina explains that she finds it difficult to get her daily basics because of lack of access in stores. The woman says that there are days when it takes hours to find people on the street willing to help her enter some buildings.<\/p>\n

The Information Centre of Human Rights reported that Irina did not benefit from any assistance from government or non-governmental organizations. Moreover, she was not even aware that she is entitled to receive an allowance and has certain rights when it comes to access to public buildings.<\/p>\n

Many similar cases can be seen in most of the localities in Moldova. The lack of infrastructure, jobs and stigma are the main discriminatory issues that force many disabled people to be fully dependent on their relatives or otherwise beg for money.<\/p>\n
