The United Nations (UN) calls on the authorities in Moldova to “adopt urgent measures to attain social inclusion in the country.” The UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Magdalena Sepúlveda, who travelled to Moldova recently said that there is widespread inequality amongst the different social classes.<\/p>\n

“Inequality is an issue of deep concern to all people in Moldova,” the official said at the end of her first fact-finding mission to the country, according to a press release. “Even small steps taken to strengthen social inclusion in Moldova will have a major impact on empowering the most disadvantaged in the country.”<\/p>\n

Magdalena Sepúlveda said that Moldova is dedicated to establishing a robust legal system through implementing important pieces of legislation. She maintains that more has to be done, especially when it comes to implementation.<\/p>\n

The UN official said that the Moldovan Government was successful in enhancing economic growth and reducing poverty from almost 70% of the overall population in 2000 to 26% in 2004.<\/p>\n

According to her, the 2005 economic growth and development models have not been of benefit to all members of society.<\/p>\n

“There is a widening gap between urban and rural areas and some groups of the society still remain at the margin of social, political and economic processes,” she stressed.<\/p>\n

The expert drew special attention to the troubling rates of educational attainment in general mandatory education, with children in rural areas, children with disabilities and Romani children particularly affected.<\/p>\n

“I am appalled by the conditions that persons with disabilities live in. I am extremely troubled by the practice of exclusion from society of persons with disabilities, in particular with mental disabilities without any serious effort to ensure their integration,” Ms. Sepúlveda said after visiting psychiatric hospitals and neuro-psychiatric residential institutions for persons with disabilities on both sides of the Nistru River.<\/p>\n

As a result of her research trip to Moldova, the expert calls for reforms aimed at integrating persons with disabilities in the community.<\/p>\n

She has also found a high level of stigma and discrimination against the Roma minority. According to her, this exclusion prevents the Roma people to escape poverty.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
