Civic Platform Action 2012 gathered 117,481 signatures in favor of shaping the Romanian national policy towards a closer relation with the Republic of Moldova, eventually, unification of the two countries, based on their joint historical roots.<\/p>\n

The signatures were collected in all Romanian districts and Moldovan capital of Chisinau in the so-called “Bringing Bessarabia home” campaign. The signatures will be addressed to the Romanian Parliament.<\/p>\n

Bessarabia joined Romania after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918 and was part of Romania until 1940. During that year, it was surrendered to the Soviet Union under the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact signed secretly between Hitler and Stalin.<\/p>\n

Bessarabia is a synonym for Moldova and is used to identify present-day region of the Republic of Moldova that still remains incomplete since some northern and southern parts of Bessarabia belong to Ukraine today.<\/p>\n

Prominent cultural personalities, such as musicians, composers and writers from both countries are backing the campaign.<\/p>\n

“The initiator of the campaign – the Civic Platform Action 2012 – expresses its hopefulness that the agreement of the regular citizens will make the Romanian politicians more responsible and will support the introduction of the bill in Parliament in September,” the Civil Platform said on their website.<\/p>\n

The draft bill, which Action 2012 want to insert, regards the joint cultural, educational, social and economic development of citizens residing in both countries, as well as features related to the relationship between the citizens of Moldova and Romania.<\/p>\n

People in the Republic of Moldova speak Romanian, although the Constitution states that “Moldovan” is the official language of the country. However, linguists maintain that “Moldovan” is only a dialect spoken by the people residing in Moldova. In schools, the students study in Romanian and their textbooks have “Romanian language” written on the cover.<\/p>\n

Romanian President Traian Basescu has always been a strong supporter of the Republic of Moldova. He reiterated that Moldova should be part of Romania again given that the people residing on both banks of the Prut River have a “blood relationship.”<\/p>\n
