The main reason why teenagers from Moldova leave the country is the weak and unstable economy. This leads to a steady increase in joblessness, lower salaries and boosts poverty.<\/p>\n

According to the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Moldova, over 56% of the total amount of Moldovan migrants in 2012 were teenagers aged 15-34. The Ministry reported that over 328,000 people from Moldova left the country last year.<\/p>\n

Sergiu Stanciu, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport said that migration has mainly affected the transition democracies and developing countries, including Moldova.<\/p>\n

“The migration phenomenon is a process specific to the countries that experience a transition to democracy, like our country. This way, migration becomes part of a global process,” Sergiu Stanciu said.<\/p>\n

The Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission to Moldova, Antonia Polosa, said that migration generates new opportunities but implies some risks, such as the illegal border-crossing, illegal labor and trafficking in persons.<\/p>\n

“The youth migration from the Republic of Moldova is often linked to the difficult economic conditions,” Antonia Polosa said. The official added that IOM helps the teenagers to get rid of poverty through projects that hinder uncontrolled migration and fights against human trafficking.<\/p>\n

According to the United Nations (UN), international migrants are individuals who live outside of their home country for at least one year. The UN estimates that as of 2012, there are over 214 million international migrants worldwide.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
