There are Moldovans settled abroad who did not forget their home country and continue to share their own culture at international competitions and contests. It is also the case of Lucia Arseni, a 21-year-old young woman who lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, the United States of America.<\/em><\/p>\n

Living in the USA for 11 years now, Lucia attends St. Paul College pursuing a degree in International Business. However, university is not her only strongest asset. She got remarked after being crowned as Miss Minnesota Coed 2011 in a national beauty pageant. Holding this title, the Moldovan young woman will represent Minnesota at the national pageant in Florida in November this year. <\/em><\/p>\n

In an interview with Moldova.ORG, Lucia Arseni speaks about her life thousands of kilometers away from Moldova, her achievements and what is she mostly proud of.<\/em><\/p>\n

Moldova.ORG: What memories do you have about Moldova?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia Arseni:<\/strong> I moved to the United States when I was eleven, so I still have a pretty good memory of Moldova. Some of my favorite memories are spending time with my grandparents at their "Dacha". It was a place where kids could be kids, climb trees, eat fruit right off the tree, and even stay up too late. Another thing I loved to do is going to watch concerts and hang out in the city square for holidays. My favorite memory is probably being part of “Lia Ciocirlia” choir; we traveled quite a bit and had lots of concerts.<\/p>\n

Moldova.ORG: How did the United States welcome you? Did you need a period of adjustment? How was it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia Arseni:<\/strong> When I first moved to the United States it was a bit up and down, for the most part I adjusted to the way of life and the language pretty well and quickly. I was fortunate to attend an elementary school with predominately immigrant children and there were programs in place to help with the language. I feel that I am a very outgoing person so it wasn’t too difficult to make friends, and people in the US are fascinated by other languages and cultures.<\/p>\n

Moldova.ORG: Where does the decision to participate at Miss American Coed come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia Arseni:<\/strong> I have been involved in the community through volunteering way before I began competing in pageants. The work that I have been doing revolves around youth in leadership, and helping not only shape great confident leaders but also put them in a multi-cultural environment so they can also learn understanding of others within their culture and out. I have been a part of other pageant systems and I loved all, I felt that they were all unique and I took away something different from each one. What attracted me about the Miss American Coed system is their message and platform which is "Youth of today, Future of tomorrow". It was a very easy decision to be part of a pageant that shares my platform.<\/p>\n

Moldova.ORG: Did it matter the fact that you are not a Native American?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia Arseni:<\/strong> I didn’t feel like it mattered at all in any pageant that I have been part of. I embrace being from Moldova and never have an issue telling a judge. My culture and origin is part of me, and I would never hide it.<\/p>\n

Moldova.ORG: What offers did emerge after winning this award?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia Arseni:<\/strong> A lot of appearances! As a titleholder I have so many opportunities for volunteer work, parades and festivals. One of the most exciting things to happen, is I was asked by one of the representatives of March of Dimes (non-profit organization that raises money for premature babies) to help plan team building activities for next year’s local event in my city. Best of all I have the chance to represent my state at the national pageant.<\/p>\n

Moldova.ORG: What kind of information do you share with those who ask you about Moldova?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia Arseni:<\/strong> Most people unfortunately don’t know anything about Moldova or have never heard of it, so good thing I love talking about my home country. The first thing people want to know is where it is, my answer is always: It’s a beautiful landlocked country between Romania and Ukraine above the Black Sea. I love telling people about our grape and wine export and that Moldova is home to the longest wine cellar in the world.<\/p>\n

Moldova.ORG: What projects do you have for the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia Arseni:<\/strong> I am currently attending St Paul College and pursuing either an International Relations or International Business degree. Pageant wise I am not sure yet, maybe Miss America, or Miss USA, or maybe even return to Moldova to compete for the Miss Moldova title.<\/p>\n
