Several events, concerts and demonstrations have taken place in Moldova’s capital of Chisinau on Thursday. The society is split in two parts: a group celebrating the Victory Day, whereas the others mark Europe Day.<\/p>\n

The supporters of “Action 2012” movement, who demand the reunification of Moldova with Romania, have called for the Russian troops to be withdrawn from the Eastern side of the country. Moreover, the demonstrators expressed their anger with the concert to be organized by the Russian Embassy in Moldova in the Central Square of Chisinau. Some Russian singers are expected to organize the concert later on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The Russian vice-premier Dmitry Rogozin is also expected to arrive in Chisinau. However, it is still unknown who is he going to meet with. Early in the morning, the Russian official participated at the Victory Day manifestations in Tiraspol, the so-called capital of the separatist region of Transnistria.<\/p>\n

Dmitry Rogozin said that Moldova “will have a beautiful future only if it will join the Eurasian Union.” He mentioned that both banks of the Nistru River should recall the joint history they have, referring to the Victory Day.<\/p>\n

On May 9, 1945, the Soviet troops claimed victory over Nazi Germany, bringing to an end the Second World War. The Republic of Moldova was part of the Soviet Union at that time. According to the historians, over 260,000 Moldovan (Bessarabian) soldiers served in the Red Army during the Soviet times.<\/p>\n

More than 300,000 Moldovans lost their lives during the Second World War.<\/p>\n

On this day, the President of Moldova, Nicolae Timofti delivered a speech with two messages. The head of state said that May 9 should not be an opportunity for political parties to promote their ideologies, but rather “Christianly commemorate all the war victims.”<\/p>\n

Moreover, Nicolae Timofti pointed out that the defeat of Hitler helped to create a new Europe – “A Europe without wars; a Europe of peaceful development and freedom.”<\/p>\n
