Over 11,000 Romanians have signed a petition for the reunification of Moldova with Romania, the organizers of “Aduce Basarabia Acasa” campaign declared. The signatures have been collected in Bucharest and the counties of Suceava, Arges and Dolj.<\/p>\n

The signature gathering campaign was started by a coalition of 30 NGOs whose aim is to collect at least 100,000 signatures. They will then be forwarded to the Romanian Parliament to encourage them to draft a programme oriented towards the reunification of Moldova with Romania.<\/p>\n

The petitioners demand the return of the territory lost by Romania in 1940 after the Soviet Union troops took control over the Eastern part of the country, annexing Bessarabia, known today as the Republic of Moldova. The territory was surrendered under the secret provisions of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.<\/p>\n

Several NGOs and political movements emerged in the last three years in both Romania and Moldova demanding the reunification of the two countries in one sovereign state. According to “Actiunea 2012” (Action 2012), a coalition of non-governmental organizations and initiative groups, 116 Romanian lawmakers expressed support for the actions undertaken by this alliance. However, the organizers want to make sure they have public support for their initiative.<\/p>\n

“Bringing Bessarabia back home is a pursuit which comes from the people and will be taken over by the lawmakers. We want to collect these signatures at any cost to prove to our Bessarabian brothers that we, the Romanians, have not forgotten them,” said Mihai Nicolae, one of the initiative’s authors.<\/p>\n
