Two public opinion surveys<\/a> conducted in April throughout Moldova revealed that over half of the population wants their country to join the European Union, while some 30% are against such a move. Moreover, the study found that the people lack knowledge about the benefits an EU membership of Moldova would have.<\/p>\n

The numbers are worrying as the citizens are not well informed about the advantages of having closer relations with the European Union. Only 20% of the population believes that the freedom of movement is one of the most important patterns, while some 10% think that new jobs will be generated once the country joins the Union. But roughly 52% of people said they don’t know exactly what the advantages are.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan leadership admits that there is an informational shortcoming at national level.<\/p>\n

“I admit that maybe we have not communicated enough about advantages with our citizens of different social categories, beginning with the farmers and finishing with the public servants,” the interim Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iurie Leanca said in an interview<\/a> with Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty.<\/p>\n

The official believes that once the currently negotiated agreements with the European Union will be enacted and the results will be obvious, the citizens will appreciate the new changes and will better understand the benefits.<\/p>\n

The Diaspora strongly supports Moldova’s integration in the European Union. According to the official data of the Foreign Ministry, more than 332,000 people work abroad, whereas the unofficial numbers suggest that more than half a million of people reside in foreign countries, mainly in Russia and EU member states, such as Italy, Portugal, Spain, Greece and others.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
