Four years ago, on April 7, tens of thousands of anti-Communist teenagers took to the streets of Moldova’s capital of Chisinau in a rally that was called the “Twitter Revolution.”<\/p>\n

The roots of the unrest go two days back – April 5, 2009 when the Communist Party won the election with almost 50% of votes. Amid reported unfair elections, the opposition political parties and non-Communist voters called on new elections.<\/p>\n

Thousands of messages were spread out via Twitter, Facebook and Odnoklassniki (a Russia-based social network) calling on people to go on the streets and express their anger regarding the result of the election.<\/p>\n

On April 7 follows the massive unrest on the streets of Chisinau. Over 30,000 people, mainly teenagers, gathered in front of the seat of the Government. After several speeches, the crowd moved to the Presidency building where the things sparked into violence. Several teenagers threw stones and broke the windows of the Presidency, while others clashed with riot police. Dozens got injured and were taken to the hospital. The flag of Romania and the European Union were installed on top of the Presidency by some protesters.<\/p>\n

Hours after the incident, the angry mass of people crossed the street and attacked the Parliament building. Youngsters with their faces covered broke the entrance. Massive destructions followed. Thousands of documents were destroyed, furniture brought out and burned and windows smashed.<\/p>\n

During the days which followed, the terror seemed to have haunted the streets of Chisinau. The police took over the control again. Dozens of teenagers, including underage, were kidnapped on the streets. Some have been severely beaten up at the police stations. Parents were not informed about their children’s arrest.<\/p>\n

Current Minister of Domestic Affairs, Dorin Recean said in a comment that police failed to provide security to the people because they were complying with the orders of some leaders who had their own political interests.<\/p>\n

“Police failed not because it wasn’t prepared enough. They failed because they received order from politically involved persons, which were pursuing a narrow political interest that did not represent the state interest. Some police officers got involved in torture acts and inhuman and infamous behavior,” Dorin Recean said.<\/p>\n

Four years after the events, there are still perpetrators who were not punished for the actions undertaken.  <\/p>\n
