The number of pupils who go to school in Moldova has slightly decreased in 2011-2012. According to the data provided by the Education Ministry on Monday, the number of pupils attending school decreased by 2.8%. The decline is registered in the countryside where the schools have less students (-4.9%) and less qualified teachers (-0.05%).<\/p>\n

The data revealed that although more pupils study now in one class, their grades go up. The Ministry of Education said their reforms were efficient and better results can be observed.<\/p>\n

„Despite the fact that the number of pupils has decreased because of the unfavorable demographic patterns, the number of teachers decreased only by 0.05%,” Education Minister Maia Sandu said.<\/p>\n

The study of the Ministry revealed that over 150,000 pupils (41.9%) are „vulnerable” which means that they come from low-income families, large families, or families with one or both parents jobless. These pupils are more likely to skip classes.<\/p>\n

The largest number of vulnerable pupils is registered in secondary school (44%), while high schools register a lower number of such cases (31.2%).<\/p>\n

Other worrisome data are the recordings related to the number of pupils who left school and went abroad. Almost 7,000 pupils, mainly from countryside areas, went to another country in 2011. Over 70% of them are primary and secondary school pupils.<\/p>\n

Other 215 pupils were not matriculated in any school in 2012.<\/p>\n
