The United States expressed concern about human rights in Transnistria, Moldova’s breakaway region. In a press statement drafted on Wednesday, the US Embassy to Chisinau said they are welcoming the United Nations Report of Human Rights in Transnistria, a report<\/a> which was recently issued by senior expert Thomas Hammarberg on behalf of the international organization.<\/p>\n

His report gave over 40 recommendations related to human rights abuses he observed in Transnistria while travelling to the region in three separate missions in 2012.<\/p>\n

The US Embassy in Moldova said in their statement that they share the concerns presented in the report adding that they have also received credible information about human rights abuses.<\/p>\n

“We join the United Nations in calling for the respect of internationally recognized human rights standards in the Transnistria region,” the statement showed. “As outlined in our annual human rights report, we too have received credible reports of torture, denial of due process, and the conditions in Transnistrian detention facilities that do not meet international standards.”<\/p>\n

After the report was published, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay also urged the authorities in Transnistria to make sure human rights are being respected. She emphasized in a press release that human rights do not have borders.<\/p>\n

“Human rights do not have any borders. It is vital to address underlying human rights issues in disputed territories, regardless of the political recognition or the legal status of a territory,” Ms. Pillay said.<\/p>\n

The UN official added that we should not neglect the human rights of people living in separatist regions, referring especially to Transnistria.<\/p>\n

“Mr. Hammarberg’s research in the Transnistrian region clearly demonstrates how the deployment of technical human rights experts can truly benefit people on the ground, without having a bearing on issues of political recognition or the legal status of a territory,” UN’s Navi Pillay said.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
