Moldova ranks 55th in the 2013 World Press Freedom Index of the Reporters Without Borders. This is a slight decrease compared to the same index of 2011-2012 when Moldova ranked 53rd.<\/p>\n

The watchdog measures every year the general level of freedom of information around the world. It also analyses the performance of the world’s governments in terms of this freedom.<\/p>\n

Moldova is followed by Hungary and Italy, the latter going up four positions compared to last year, but still ranking a low place – 57th. Moldova’s neighbors, Romania and Ukraine scored 42nd and 126th, respectively.<\/p>\n

Russian Federation continues to have a reputation of a country with limited freedom of press. It fell six positions compared to last year, scoring 148th in 2013.<\/p>\n

Reporters Without Borders argues that Russia’s score went down since Vladimir Putin’s return to power. The watchdog said that “repression has been stepped up in response to an unprecedented wave of opposition protests.”<\/p>\n

Finland, the Netherlands and Norway are countries with the freest press in the world, while Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea are on the bottom of the list.<\/p>\n

The ranking included 179 countries.<\/p>\n

The report said that 2012 was the deadliest year for journalists ever. Most of the murders took place in Somalia, Syria, Mexico and Pakistan.<\/p>\n

Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire said that democracies are more prone to respect the freedom of press than dictatorships.<\/p>\n

“The Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders does not take direct account of the kind of political system but it is clear that democracies provide better protection for the freedom to produce and circulate accurate news and information than countries where human rights are flouted,” Christophe Deloire said.<\/p>\n
