UPDATE (9:05 PM; GMT +2) <\/strong>Trucks and buses are not allowed to enter Moldova through nine checkpoints until Monday. The regulation was issued by the Moldovan Customs Service due to the wintry weather. The authorities have to deal with the heavy snow that fell on all the national and regional roads of the country blocking the traffic. The heavy-duty trucks are being stopped at the north, northeastern and northwestern checkpoints while the plows clear the roads tonight. <\/em><\/p>\n

Eleven towns in northern Moldova have electric power shortages after a heavy snow has hit the region. All the national and local roads are blocked and the authorities are doing their best to remove the snow in order to have access to the people isolated by snow which measures two meters (80 inches) in some places. The authorities call on people to cancel all their unnecessary trips and stay home. However, those already stuck in the snow-drifts are advised to call the emergency number 901.<\/p>\n

Some checkpoints have a hard time dealing with the cross-border traffic. The Moldovan Customs Service announced that there is a limited access through some checkpoints in the northern part of the country. The checkpoints affected are Lipcani – Rad\u0103uti – Prut, Criva – Mamaliga, Larga – Kelmen\u0163i , Ocni\u0163a – Sokireani, Briceni – Rossosani, Otaci – Moghiliov-Podolsk, Costesti – Stinca. The drivers are advised to avoid these cross-border points.<\/p>\n

Over 40% of the busses connecting the capital Chisinau with the northern Moldova have been cancelled. The isolated counties are: Briceni, Soroca, Drochia, Floresti, Donduseni, Rascani, Glodeni, Ocnita, Telenesti and Ungheni.<\/p>\n

National media report that several busses carrying passengers from Moscow and Kiev are stuck in the snow-drifts in the north-eastern part of Moldova. Many other people, including children are blocked on the roads that are impassable.<\/p>\n

The flights on Chisinau International Airport have not been affected, the airlines operating without difficulties.<\/p>\n
