Three Moldovan customs officers have been dismissed on Friday after letting a truck with more than 630,000 smuggling packs of cigarettes cross the Moldovan-Romanian border. The smuggling was discovered at the Romanian checkpoint of Albita.<\/p>\n

According to the driver, who holds dual citizenship (Romanian and Moldovan), he was carrying empty jars from a Moldovan factory and was supposed to arrive in Macedonia. After the Romanian customs officers searched the entire truck, they discovered 632.850 packs of cigarettes made in Moldova. The authorities working for the Customs Service of Moldova denied that the cigarettes would have been produced in Moldova. Moreover, the Moldovan bodies said that some 400,000 packs of cigarettes were discovered.<\/p>\n

Romanian authorities said this is the greatest seizing they have made since 2010 at the border with Moldova.<\/p>\n

Both Moldovan and Romanian authorities have established a joint investigation team that will identify the entire smuggling network and punish the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

Representatives of the Liberal Democrat Party of Moldova – leading the Customs Service of the country – said that some employees of the customs are allegedly involved in the case. However, the Communist Party accuses the government of supporting smuggling.<\/p>\n
