Over 50% of people in Moldova believe that corruption has increased in the last year. A survey conducted by CBS-AXA together with Transparency International Moldova found that the causes of corruption are the lack of punishment of bribers, and inefficient and insufficient action taken by the Government.<\/p>\n

“To obtain the support of the public, the governance needs to conduct an extended awareness raising campaign on the implementation of its engagements vis-a-vis corruption prevention in diverse public institutions,” the Transparency International report suggested.<\/p>\n

Moldovans think that corruption is widely spread among prosecutors, judges, police employees, healthcare and education institutions, the survey showed. The healthcare system and education institutions are the most corrupt. Over 55.2% of respondents said they give bribes to the doctors, while 28% admitted they give money to teachers.<\/p>\n

The statistics show that only 27% of people in Moldova do not accept to pay bribes in difficult situations.<\/p>\n

The Transparency International report suggests that the Government should tackle the corruption beginning from the law enforcement institutions.<\/p>\n

“It is clear that to relieve the tension created in the society by the spread of corruption, it would be most efficient to concentrate on fighting corruption in health care, police and education institutions,” the study suggested. “If the governance aims to support businesses and increase its budget revenue – they should concentrate on fiscal inspectorates and customs. Nevertheless, if the governance wants to have a systemic approach in curbing corruption, it should start with such law enforcement institutions as the prosecutor’s office and law courts.”
