According to various surveys Transnistria is on 9th<\/sup> or 10th<\/sup> place in the top of people’s priorities. Only 2% of respondents consider that the Transnistrian problem is the most pressing one and 5% believe it is on second place behind such problems as poverty, crime or inflation. The issue is addressed in the study “Transnistria: a gradual integration” done by Nicu Popescu and Leonid Litra.<\/p>\n

The authors state that this ranking is in a sharp contrast with the situation in other post soviet countries, such as Azerbaijan or Georgia, where the concern towards frozen conflicts is much greater.<\/p>\n

“The positive side is that such “indifference” is clearly one of the pillars of stability and peace in the region. The lack of public interest means that there is little pressure for militarization or nationalistic agitation around the area of conflict, as it was in the case of other conflicts. But the disadvantage is that because of disinterest towards Transnistria, the Moldovan society is not willing to make significant concessions. Therefore, the Moldovan society tends to be against to the most significant forms of power sharing, such as federalization or even the inclusion of Transnistrian elite into a united Republic of Moldova. It is most likely that among the elites from Moldova, very few would be happy to see the Transnistrian leadership holding political office in Moldova, from ministers, members of Parliament, to Ambassadors”, it is written in the study.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the authors believe that the Moldovan society and political elite are concerned not only with benefits, but also costs of reintegration. “It is not clear for a growing number of Moldovans that the benefits of reintegration will outweigh its costs”, it is pointed out in the study.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
