Some 10,000 people are expected to march on the Main Avenue in Moldova’s capital of Chisinau on Sunday calling for reunification with Romania. The riot police are ready to intervene in force if any violence will be reported.<\/p>\n

A similar demonstration last month in Moldova’s second largest city of Balti left individuals injured after the unionists group was attacked by a group identified as “patriots.” The clashes could be hardly prevented by the security officers.<\/p>\n

Moldovan society is quite divided when it comes to reunification with Romania. Some believe Moldova should re-unite with Romania as they were from 1918 to 1940. Others think Moldova should not depend on anyone or the country should go East in hope to relive the Soviet times. The struggle is stronger as in Moldova lives a significant Russian-speaking minority which does not have any basic knowledge of the national language of Moldova – Romanian.<\/p>\n

The organizers – the “Action 2012” initiative group – of tomorrow demonstration call on all pro-Romania groups and parties to join the manifestation.<\/p>\n

“We want to inform the politicians and citizens from both Romanian states, as well as the international community, that the reunification of Moldova with Romania is an irreversible process because so many people want that. This fact is demonstrated by the recent survey organized in Romania which says that 90% of the Romanians want the reunification,” the group said in a press release.<\/p>\n

In a group opened on Facebook, more than 2,000 users said they are about to attend the rally, while other 1, 700 said they might do so.<\/p>\n

The Communist Party of Moldova (PCRM) promised to go against the demonstration and do everything possible to stop it.<\/p>\n

“Following the events in Balti city, it has been proved that the law enforcement authorities are not able to secure the public order. It is obvious that the so-called ‘reunification march’ on September 16 will end the same way as it ended in Balti – with massive disorder and violence,” the Communist Party said in a press release.<\/p>\n

Moldovan Ministry of Interior said in a press release that the participants at such demonstrations are obligated to follow the laws, public order, to abstain from actions which could foil the development of the meetings. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
