The Academy of Sciences of Moldova affirms that the only way to save the Nistru River from a possible environmental catastrophe is to sign a cooperation agreement between Moldova and Ukraine on Nistru river’s protection and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

According to the data presented at a press conference by Professor Elena Zubcov, the member of the Zoology Institute of the Academy of Sciences, the medial water flow of Nistru significantly decreased. It means that if this problem will not reach Moldovan and Ukrainian Governments’ agenda, we risk to run low of water source.<\/p>\n

“The Moldovan-Ukrainian agreement is a mechanism of international influence that would allow monitoring the situation today. It is also necessary to perform an international expertise of water quality in Nistru, the more so as the greatest danger is the store of chemicals in Kalush, Ukraine”, Elena Zubcov said.<\/p>\n

In the same context, the Ombudsman Aurelia Grigoriu warned the public and the authorities in Chisinau about the danger this store of chemicals creates.<\/p>\n

“The mine of 150 m, which was a supplier of chemicals during the Soviet Union, became too small for highly toxic chemical waste stored here. There are only 12 m to fill the quarry. Because of its overload, unstable storage dams could give up. In this case, approximately two million cubic meters of waste could reach the river. Republic of Moldova, Odessa region, as well as Danube Delta in Romania will be seriously affected. Chisinau will run out of drinking water”, is written in a press release of the Center for Human Rights.<\/p>\n
