Romanian Ministry of Health informed that 12 persons were infected with West Nile virus in 2012. One woman died as a result of the disease, Mediafax news agency reported.<\/p>\n

According to same source, the number of infections did not raise compared to last year when 11 people were reported infected.<\/p>\n

“There isn’t a tendency of increase in the number of cases in 2012. We are currently in the period when such illnesses appear,” officials of the Ministry of Health said.<\/p>\n

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention informed that the number of infections across the United States has sharply increased recently. More than 1,100 cases of infection and 41 deaths have been reported two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

The doctors say the virus is a potentially serious disease. Approximately 80% of infected people will not show any symptoms. The others may expect fever, nausea, vomiting, and headache, skin rash on the stomach, chest and back. West Nile is mainly transmitted by the mosquitoes and cannot be transmitted from person to person. The illnesses that may occur are the neuroinvasive disease which attacks the person’s nervous system and may cause West Nile encephalitis, West Nile meningitis, West Nile meningoencephalitis and West Nile poliomyelitis.
