Two opposite groups clashed today in Moldova’s southern city of Cahul, 165 km away from Chisinau, the capital. Members of the “Action 2012” group, together with the “Unity Council” and the National-Liberal Party (PNL) who are strong supporters of Moldova’s reintegration with Romania marched in Cahul today carrying pro Romania banners.<\/p>\n

A group called “Moldova’s patriots” tried to stop the authorized march of the group demanding union with Romania. They had to be barred by a chain of police officers in order to prevent the conflict to escalate into violence. Some opponents of the march expressed their anger by throwing eggs at the participants of the demonstration supporting Romania.<\/p>\n

A similar conflict took place in Chisinau on March 2012 when another march of this kind was organized. The members of “Action 2012” group promised to organize a similar demonstration on August 5 in the northern city of Balti, where the local administration is very left-wing oriented and strong supporters of the Communist Party which is against any pro-Romanian action.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan society is quite divided on this issue. Some believe Moldova should re-unite with Romania as they were from 1918 to 1940. Some think Moldova should not depend on anyone or the country should go East in hope to relive the Soviet times. The struggle is stronger as many people are Russian-speakers-only, and don’t have any basic knowledge of the national language of Moldova – Romanian.<\/p>\n
