Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase tried to commit suicide late yesterday at night after he has been sentenced to two years in prison. He is at the hospital yet and had a surgery early today. According to the doctors, no vital injuries have been reported. He will remain in the hospital under supervision for the next 14 days.<\/p>\n

Adrian Nastase, 61, was about to be taken to the jail by the police. They arrived at his home wanting to arrest him. The former Premier asked to be allowed to enter his room and grab some books where he took a gun and shot himself in the neck.<\/p>\n

Mr. Nastase was Romania’s Prime Minister between 2000 and 2004. He was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1990 to 1992.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court sentenced him to two years in prison yesterday and the decision is final. He is charged with illegally raising 1.6 million Euro during the electoral campaign of 2004. Mr. Nastase becomes the first Romanian Premier to be sent to prison for illegal actions after the fall of the communism in 1989.<\/p>\n

Ioan Cazacu, Mr. Nastase’s lawyer said they will appeal the Court’s decision to the European Court of Human Rights.<\/p>\n

According to Adevarul newspaper, former President Ion Iliescu said that Adrian Nastase was treated in an inhuman way. Former Romanian Premier holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Sociology. He is deputy within the Romanian Parliament.
