Mass-media has always been an important agent of democracy. Every country needs a plurality of ideas, opinions, and these features can be provided only through a free press. Today we mark Freedom of Press Day.<\/p>\n

“World Press Freedom Day is our opportunity to raise the flag in the fight to advance media freedom. We call on States, professional media and non-governmental organizations everywhere to join forces with the United Nations to promote online and offline freedom of expression in accordance with internationally accepted principles. This is a pillar of individual rights, a foundation for healthy societies and a force for social transformation,” said the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova is a joint statement.<\/p>\n

According to the United Nations, the freedom of press faces severe pressures all over the world. UNESCO condemned the killing of 62 journalists who died as a result of their work in 2011.<\/p>\n

“These journalists must not be forgotten and these crimes should not remain unpunished. As media moves online, more online journalists, including bloggers, are being harassed, attacked, and killed for their work. They must receive the same protection as traditional media workers,” the UN official said.<\/p>\n

Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat sent a message today to all the media representatives saying that he congratulates the journalists of Moldova. He stated that the country registered significant improvements regarding the freedom of press.<\/p>\n

“Our country has achieved some progress in promoting the honest and unbiased journalism, but there are still many things to be done,” Vlad Filat said.<\/p>\n

“Freedom of press gathers the people around the democratic rules, promoting independent thinking, favoring the strengthening of a healthy society, which should act with responsibility,” added the Premier.
