Veterans of War on Nistru carried hammers with them to knock down the monument of Lenin which is located in Moldexpo Park of Moldova’s capital of Chisinau. Another group of people henchmen of the Communist Party surrounded Lenin’s statute to avert it from being destroyed.<\/p>\n

The people gathered at the side blustered rough statements, some supporting the demolition of the monument, while others being against the action. A chain of police officers prevented the statue from being damaged.<\/p>\n

Pro-demolition voices say the monument should be turned down because it does not represent the country.<\/p>\n

“Lenin’s monument does not represent our peoples. We have our heroes who are an example for us, such as writers and artists,” a woman present at the site told Moldova.ORG.<\/p>\n

She continued by saying that “most of the parents and grandparents fear to tell the truth to their children about what happened in Moldova during the Soviet era in 1937, 1940, 1947” before and after the Second World War.<\/p>\n

“My father was called on by the KGB so many times because he was always saying the truth,” explained the woman.<\/p>\n

Another man who supports the action said that Lenin was an anti-Christian leader who killed pastors and not is being defended by ‘traitors’.<\/p>\n

“It’s horrible. So long as Moldova won’t de-communize, these Moldovans will continue to be the slaves and the colony of the Russians’ leaders,” said the man who is a fierce supporter of the monument’s demolition.<\/p>\n

Representatives of the other side said that the monument of the leader should remain in place because he is part of the country’s history. Taking advantage of the tensions, some people started to complain about their small salaries and pensions from Moldova.<\/p>\n

“I am lucky to receive a retirement paycheck from Russia,
\notherwise I would not be able to survive here,” said a Russian-speaking woman.<\/p>\n

The Chief of the Municipal police said the situation at the site “is under control.” According to him, the demonstrators are not authorized to protest.<\/p>\n

Several other monuments of Lenin are installed in Moldova.
