Over 230,880 cigarettes made in Moldova were seized at the Romanian checkpoint Oancea at the end of last week. The smugglers were trying to introduce tobacco in Romania to sell it for a higher price, which is usually four times bigger in the EU member state.<\/p>\n

According to the press service of the Romanian customs, the cigarettes were confiscated by the customs guardians. The value of the tobacco is about 11,200 EURO. Their vehicles were arrested until the end of the investigation.<\/p>\n

As a result of the attempt to enter illegal products in the European Union, the smugglers are prosecuted for “collecting, holding, producing, transporting, storing and selling the goods which were supposed to be declared at the checkpoint,” informs the press service of the customs.<\/p>\n

Five persons were arrested preventively. An ongoing investigation is currently being held.<\/p>\n

Such cases happen quite often, especially after Romania joined the European Union in 2007. Many Moldovans are attracted by the high cost of the cigarettes and other products and try to enter goods on the Romanian market to sell them for a better price. As of 2007 the citizens of Moldova are required to hold a visa or a special permit in order to enter the country.
